Print Accuracy

The left Lion was done using a reprap unit, whereas the right Lion was printed on an over $10K 3D printer.

I suspect that the items were not printed using the same temperature. The 3D lion print on the left look a hotter print, while the one on the right looks like a colder temperature print (which always shows more distinct print layers). Rounded shapes, like this Lion always print easier- whereas flat surfaces and sharp corners usually expose printer model limitations.

Also- in this lion print,itlooks likethe layer height on the left print is less than the plastic layer on the right print. The left print is kind of squashing the layer flat which smoothes the surface. Pls note that comparison’s are difficult to make, as raft settings (like river timber-log rafts) can deliberately have different spacings between lines (logs).  But printing experience can easily win over machine cost!

This is a print done with our latest 0.3mm nozzle, using our latest Prusa Explorer. We have just about 5 print layers per 1mm printing height- resulting in very fine detail. The printed clamp has not been cleaned up.

All prints have some daggy bits when printing holes and for support structures for overhanging shapes or when leading in and out of a print. Print layers direction can be changed to minimize after print clean ups and or to add extra strength. This holds true for commercial units as well as reprap printers.

Cleaning a print is usually done with a sharp blade. Surfaces can also be filed, sanded and painted- to suit tastes and finish objectives. Print durability can also be changed by changing the fill-in and the print temperature.

So it is possible to print an aircraft wing as a skin over a light honeycomb and a near solid object for a usable plastic spring.
