Friday Frenzy: The Top 3D Printing Breakthroughs This Week

  1. The MarkForged Mark One 3D, the world’s first carbon fiber 3D printer is now available for pre-order. Designed to overcome the strength limitations of other 3D printed materials, the 3D printer is designed to print composite materials.
  2. 3D Printing has changed the world of Special Effects. Legacy Effects has been at the forefront of 3D printing and additive manufacturing technology for years.
  3. Autodesk released a new version of Meshmixer, a mesh editing program with a strong focus on 3D printing. Meshmixer is a free and powerful prototype design tool that allows users to work with 3D mesh files.
  4. 3D printers could transform the manufacture of airplane parts. Manufacturer Airbus reported its expanded use of 3D printing (additive layer manufacturing) technology to manufacture individual parts or even larger airframe structures for its line of aircraft.
  5. Nokia partnered with the designer duo, Fyodor Golan, for London Fashion Week, to create the world’s first interactive skirt made up of 80 of Nokia Lumia 1520 and 1020 smartphones. The skirt uses static pictures captured by the phone, or live feeds on the 80 screens that adorn it.
  6. Filament sculptures based on the behavior of 3D printing. Instead of creating 3D models in a 3D programme and then simply have them printed out, generative artist Lia wanted to find out what is possible with the actual properties of filament and the movements of the print head.
  7. 3D Systems in collaboration with EksoBionics recently launched the first ever 3D printed hybrid Exoskeleton robotic suit. Watch the video of Amanda Boxtel using the suit to walk again.
  8. 3D printing retailer and software provider MatterHackers launched its first Android tablet-based Desktop 3D Printer control solution. The new “MatterControl for Android” Desktop 3D Printer control tablet version will now make 3D printers stand-alone as well as networkable.
  9. First 3D printing shop in Bremen aims to scan and print the whole city. The company offers affordable 3D printers, accessories and 3D printing services to the public, with the aim of bringing 3D printing to the community.
