Over the last couple of months, Meta, a wearables start-up has been involved in the development of augmented reality 3D glasses. The glasses are designed to combine the power of a smartphone and a laptop in a pair of aviator-style 3D glasses, along with a small pocket computer.
Meta has created an app that is gesture-controlled for sculpting and 3D printing, and which enables users to sculpt objects using their own hands. Users can thereafter automatically render the 3D shape and drop it to a 3D printer which will then print out a physical object.
In order to work, the Meta.01 developer edition needs to be plugged into a computer, and also has a geeky looking appearance. However, the consumer version of the glasses, MetaPro is designed to be sleeker looking and lighter.
Anticipated to ship from July 2014, the MetaPro has 15 times the display of Google Glass and runs 3D, and not just 2D. Furthermore, Meta is looking to go one step ahead of Google Glass’ which enables its users to access their email, the web and phone. The company ultimately hopes to eliminate physical objects such as phones and laptops from this particular 3D printing and 3D sculpting experience.
