When we usually think of materials that we can use in 3D printers, metal, plastics and resins come to mind. However, the 3D printing community is now toying with wood, a more natural material that has a unique aesthetic. Samir Shah is the CEO and founder of 4 AXYZ, the company that is venturing into the furniture business via 3D printing of wood. This secretive startup made the announcement last year that it would use a 3D printer to deliver custom, affordable wood furniture within days of placing an order.
Just this week, the company revealed its 3D printed furniture at the Launch festival Monday. For instance, they exhibited a stool that is 3D printed in 3 pieces, which might require 8-9 pieces when produced in the traditional method. The company’s printing technique involves adapting an existing German woodworking machine in order to operate in 3D.
This works through the combination of small, uniformly cut pieces of wood. The big secret however is how the company managed to cut the wood and thereafter layer the wood pieces together. This new 3D printing process is ideal as it reduces high labor costs, while offering consumers an affordable means of obtaining customizable furniture.
