3D printed Oreo cookies were all the rage at the SXSW this year, with many people waiting in line to customize their own cookies. Two vending machines that allowed customers to customize their own Oreo were the stars at the 2014 SXSW, based on the trending hash tags of the day. To begin, users were able to browse through a selection of “trending flavors” which were displayed on a large touch screen panel on the front of the machine.
Users could choose from twelve different flavors, including lemon, peppermint, gingerbread, birthday cake, and many more, as well as cookie tastes vanilla and chocolate. Thereafter, they could watch as their unique Oreo cookies were built from scratch. One of the 16 food-safe 3D printer produced cream in one of 4 different patterns including swirls, stripes, bull’s eye and pie shapes on the cookie.
The vending machine squeezes about 2 millimeters of frosting onto a cookie in a swirl. The empty spaces are filled with cream with an exact amount of cookie to cream ratio. Thereafter, a cookie is placed on top. The entire cookie-building process lasts for only approximately 2 minutes. It is anticipated that the machines will begin travelling all over the world very soon.
